The summer arrives, begin the holidays and, as every year, million of tourists around all the world visit Spain ; it's a very good opportunity for this second ATM issue dedicated to the tourism
In the image we can recognize the Spain shape (in red colours), the sea and ... the hot summer sun.

Maximum card TOURIST SPAIN-2. Author : J.M. Laynez

According to the information facilitated by the Commercial services of Correos, this special ATM issue had to commercialize in the most tourist areas and only for exclusive use of Correos collaborating companies ; During the summer and in the zones of great tourist affluence, Correos sign different contracts with private companies (Servi Expres in the Catalan coast, for example) to distribute and to gather the large volume of mail generated in hotels, camping and other tourist establishments, besides to sell the ATMs there. This issue was edited in order to control the stamps facilitated and sold by these companies ; Correos authorized to certain post offices to issue the ATMs under a special control and to sell them only to these companies.

But this was the theory. In practice during 2001 some rolls were used normally in several post offices for sale to the public in general.

The first ATM issue dedicated to the tourism was in October 1999, with one ATM showing different images from Sevilla and gathered some of the Spanish tourist topics.

Paper and design varieties, errors ...

There exists 3 printings of this ATM paper. The two first ones were manufactured in 2001 and 2002 by F.N.M.T., and third one in 2003 by SIGNE, S.A..

The stamps corresponding to the two first issues do not show significative differences, only the habitual variations in the tonality or displacements of the design, but we can see some important differences in those manufactured by SIGNE, S.A.

The general aspect is that the paper used and the printing made by SIGNE, S.A. are better quality. This is evident, for example, comparing the micro printing continuous line under the word CORREOS.
1st and 2nd printing - F.N.M.T. 3rd printing - SIGNE, S.A. (Click on the images to enlarge)

In the details we can see the different printing systems used in both cases.

There are no important differences in the design, although some variations can be recognized (see, for example, the blue outline on the left finishes in letter C of micro printing in a case and the R in the other).

The different size from both issues (47 x 26 mm for the stamps made by the F.N.M.T. and 47 x 27 mm the made ones by SIGNE, S.A.) is, possibly, the most evident difference, as well as the physical characteristics of the stamp, the paper used or the central cut. Unlike the other papers manufactured by SIGNE, S.A., this one does not include the emblem of Correos printed with invisible ink.

Other philatelic issues ...

Several stamp issues has been dedicated to the Tourism in Spanish Philately ; In 1990 one stamp was dedicated to the celebration of the Tourism European Year, with the reproduction of a Joan Miro poster.
