JERSEY. 2015 - Post & Go issues

The JE01 kiosk at Rue des Pres

The JE01 kiosk was installed, for two months, in the foyer of the Jersey Post headquarters, in Rue des Pres.
Throughout December 2014, this machine issued ATMs with the 'Jersey flag' and 'Union flag' definitive designs, and the identifier 'Jersey Post HQ'. In addition, the stamps issued with the 'Jersey flag' design also included the special imprint 'Merry Christmas'. This festive text appeared on all the stamps issued until late December (see article, also published in VARIABLE 35).

From January 2nd to the 23rd 2015, the kiosk issued ATMs with both definitive designs and the identifier 'Jersey Post HQ'. It was the first time that the 'Jersey flag' design could be obtained with only the post office identifier.

2015. The special imprint 'Churchill'

The first special imprint of 2015 was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Sir Winston Churchill, a politician remembered for his tenure as British Prime Minister during World War II.
At the beginning of the War, Churchill felt that Jersey had no strategic importance and was difficult to defend, so he decided to demilitarise the island, which was then occupied by German troops until the end of the War.

The special imprint 'Churchill 24.1.65' was available on the stamps issued with the 'Jersey flag' definitive design only, from January 24th 2015, to coincide with the anniversary of the date of his death.

Initially, Jersey Post announced that the imprint would be available only for a month from the JE02 kiosk installed permanently at Broad Street. But in fact it could also be obtained from the JE01 machine, temporarily installed at the company headquarters. This last combination is especially rare, because it was only available for six days ! - JE01 kiosk was removed from its location on the afternoon of January 30th, and transported to the UK for its participation at Spring Stampex 2015.

The JE01 kiosk at SPRING STAMPEX 2015. The 'protected species' series

One year after its public appearance at Spring Stampex 2014 (see article, also published in VARIABLE 32), the JE01 kiosk of Jersey Post was again installed in the 'Post & Go Services' stand, by Royal Mail, at London Spring Stampex 2015. The equipment was installed next to the new philatelic kiosk of Guernsey Post - the next postal administration joining the 'Post & Go' project (image below and article).

After one year of issuing ATMs with the 'Jersey flag' and UK 'Union flag' definitive designs, Jersey Post followed in the steps of Royal Mail and launched the first 'Post & Go' pictorial set, with six different designs
.

During Spring Stampex 2015, visitors could obtain the 'Jersey flag' design with the special imprint 'Spring Stampex February 2015', and the new
pictorial series (image below, selection screen).

The first 'Post & Go' set from Jersey Post featured some of the animal species protected by the islands Biodiversity Strategy and the Conservation of the Wildlife Law. The gorgeous designs are by Andrew Beckett, a well known British illustrator specializing in nature and wildlife. The rolls of labels were manufactured by Walsall Security Printers Ltd.

This new series, printed by the internal use printer B002, could be obtained, from February 18th 2015, from the philatelic service. It was also available from the philatelic kiosk JE01 installed at the Spring Stampex 2015 as well as from JE02 installed at the Broad Street post office, Saint Helier, Jersey.
All the stamps sold by the philatelic service have the same lower code - B2JE15 B002-1969-002. B is for the machine and and issue type (philatelic), 2JE15 for the month (February), country (Jersey), and year of issue. Then, the code of the printer (B002), 1969 is a fictitious session number taken from the year of issue of the first Jersey stamps, and 002 indicates the second 'Post & Go' issue or set.
First day receipt from Spring Stampex 2015 for the six-design Local Letter strip. The stamps bought in the postal kiosk were billed with a 20% surcharge on the face value, because of the VAT on sales made by Jersey Post in the UK

The six animals featured in this first series are the puffin (Fratercula arctica), the agile frog (Rana dalmatina), the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), the green lizard (Lacerta bilineata), the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) and barn owl (Tyto alba).

All ATMs issued by the JE02 kiosk, installed in the Saint Helier post office, include the identifier 'Broad Street'.
On February 18th, the first day of issue at this post office, the kiosk had not been reprogrammed with the face value indicators corresponding to Jersey Post, and the first stamps of the new series were issued with the UK face value indicators !!, used hitherto to issue ATMs with the 'Union flag' design.

Jersey Post published a presentation pack (right) and a pictorial first day cover with the six values and designs that make up the new series, plus a special postmark.
This postmark, illustrated with one of the island’s most beloved animals -the agile frog- could only be obtained with purchases from the philatelic service, and is not available to collectors.
Eco-Active is a programme run by the States of Jersey to promote and raise awareness of sustainable environmental practices.

The Jersey Post kiosk at the 86th Scottish Congress

After the London Spring Stampex 2015, the Intelligent AR postal kiosk (JE01) of Jersey Post was moved, for the
second time, to Dewar's Centre, Perth, in Scotland, as a part of the Royal Mail 'Post & Go Services'.
The machine was in service on April 17th and 18th, on the occasion of the 86th Annual Congress of the Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies.

(More information, see the article dedicated to the 86th Scottish Congress, also published in VARIABLE 37).

For two days, the kiosk issued ATMs with the 'Jersey flag' definitive design and the special imprint '86th Scottish   Congress 2015' (left column, below), and also the thematic series 'Protected species', with no special text (right column). The code at the bottom of all the stamps issued in Perth is B4GB15 JE01-.
To meet the demands of those who were not able to travel to Perth (!), Jersey Post sold 'Collectors strips' with the 'Jersey flag' design. These sets, printed by the internal usage printer B002, do not include the year in the special imprint, because of a programming error (central strip below). This error also appeared in the first ATMs issued by the JE01 postal kiosk installed in Perth, during the morning of the first day.

The JE01 kiosk at the LONDON 2015 EUROPHILEX

At the end of the Congress of Perth, the three kiosks of the Royal Mail 'Post & Go Services' returned south, in time for their installation in the largest philatelic event in Europe in recent years, the London 2015 Europhilex. There, on the large stand of Royal Mail, the Jersey Post JE01 kiosk shared the spotlight with nothing less than five other machines (!).

The kiosk was in service from May 13th to 16th, issuing ATMs with the 'Jersey flag' definitive design and the special imprint 'Europhilex 2015 Penny Black 175', plus the thematic series 'Protected species', with no special text.

The code at the bottom of all the stamps issued in this philatelic event is B5GB15 JE01-.

As can be seen in the upper first day receipt, the price of the 'Collectors Strip' has increased by 14 pence since Perth, resulting from the increase in postal rates by Jersey Post from April 24th 2015. Stamps bought in the postal kiosk were billed with a 20% surcharge on the face value, because of the VAT on sales made by Jersey Post in the UK.

Jersey Post also sold 'Collectors strips' with the 'Jersey flag' design and the same special imprint, but issued by the internal usage printer B002.

(More information, see the article dedicated to EUROPHILEX 2015, also published in VARIABLE 37).

The JE01 kiosk at the AUTUMN STAMPEX 2015

After Europhilex 2015, the next temporary installation of the Jersey Post JE01 kiosk was at the Autumn Stampex 2015, held from September 16th to 19th, in the Islington Business Design Centre, in London.

(More information, see the article dedicated to AUTUMN STAMPEX 2015, also published in VARIABLE 38).

As a part of the Royal Mail 'Post & Go Services', along with five philatelic kiosks of the United Kingdom, Guernsey and Gibraltar, the machine issued variable value stamps with the 'Jersey flag' definitive design and the special overprint
HM The Queen
Longest Reign
,
plus the thematic series 'Protected species', with no special text.

The code at the bottom of all the stamps issued by the kiosk during this philatelic event is B9GB15 JE01-, followed by the session and stamp numbers.

Jersey Post also sold 'Collectors strips' with the 'Jersey flag' design and the same special overprint, but issued by the internal usage printer B002.

The Jersey Post kiosk at the Sindelfingen Internationale Briefmarken-Börse

In 2015, after attending the Congress of Perth and the three major London philatelic fairs, Jersey Post decided to install its JE01 kiosk at the Sindelfingen Internationale Briefmarken-Börse, in Germany.

The machine was in service from October 29th to 31st 2015, in the booth of the 'Post & Go Services', along with kiosks A013 and A014 of Royal Mail.
(More information, see the article dedicated to the Sindelfingen stamps fair, also published in VARIABLE 39).

Over the three days of this philatelic event, the machine issued stamps with the 'Jersey flag' definitive design on one of the reels, and the thematic 'Protected species' set in the other.
Jersey Post announced that, as on other occasions, only the 'Jersey flag' design would include a special overprint, 'Sindelfingen October 2015'. However, because of a misunderstanding, the special imprint was also programmed on the 'Protected species' series.
The code at the bottom of all stamps issued by the kiosk during this philatelic event in Germany was BODE15 JE01-, followed by the session and stamp numbers.
As expected, Jersey Post sold 'Collectors strips' with the same special overprint, issued by the internal usage printer B002, but only on the 'Jersey flag' design. The code at the bottom of these stamps is BOJE15 B002- (strip below, right).

First day receipts issued by the kiosk JE01 in Sindelfingen and the internal usage printer B002 (far right).
As can be seen, the price of the stamps at Sindelfingen included an additional surcharge of 20% on the face value, because of the VAT on sales made by Jersey Post in other countries. Curiously, this tax does not apply to direct purchases from Jersey Post.

Jersey Post celebrates the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Forces Association of Jersey

While the JE01 kiosk of Jersey Post was in use at the German show, the JE02 machine installed in the Broad Street post office, in Saint Helier, was programmed with a temporary special overprint. In this case, the imprint commemorates the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Jersey branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA).

The Royal Air Forces Association is a charitable organization that provides assistance to the families of the Royal Air Force, the United Kingdom's aerial warfare force. This association does not receive any contribution from the government, and all its income comes from the contributions of its members and donations. The Jersey branch of the RAF Association was founded on October 30th 1925, and is the oldest of the hundreds of branches of RAFA, worldwide.

To mark the anniversary, Jersey Post released a special sheet with 20 self-adhesive stamps for local mail, featuring the coat of arms of Jersey and a label with the RAFA logo. Jersey Post donated £1 per sheet sold to the Jersey association.

The special overprint 'RAFA Jersey 90' was available at the JE02 kiosk only from October 30th 2015 until November 30th.

As in the case of the Sindelfingen fair, Jersey Post announced that the special overprint would only appear on stamps issued with the 'Jersey flag' design. However, early in the morning on the first day of issue, October 30th, the overprint also appeared, unexpectedly, on the 'Protected species' series (receipt and set below, right). Unlike the German fair, about two hours after the Jersey post office opened, for the start of the issue, philatelic service staff realized the error, and immediately requested a remote modification to the programming.

Yet another of these 'errors / misunderstandings' that both confuse and irritate collectors !!!
